How do we build true confidence in children from a young age? While some may see it as a “new trend,” the truth is, it’s always mattered, it’s just now getting the attention it deserves.

Confidence isn’t something we can simply give to children with praise alone. Telling a child they are kind, smart, strong, or athletic is important, but what’s just as powerful is helping them believe it themselves. That’s where affirmations come in.

Starting early, whether they’re brushing their teeth, in the shower, or navigating a tough moment, affirmations help children connect with their inner voice. Saying kind, encouraging things out loud while looking in the mirror might seem simple, but it lays the foundation for lasting self-confidence. And don’t forget to have them give themselves a high five in the mirror, Mel Robbins would definitely approve!

Here are a few kid-friendly affirmations to try:

  • “I am strong.”

  • “I am brave.”

  • “I am smart.”

  • “I am a good person.”

  • “I am a kind friend.”

  • “I am a great son/daughter/sibling.”

  • “I am a helpful student/teammate.”

Even better? Let them hear you using affirmations. Children model what they see and hear. When adults use positive self-talk, especially out loud, it shows kids that self-love isn’t just okay, it’s essential.

Confidence isn’t something we hope they find one day, it’s something we help them build, starting now.
